Line 5: The Holy Spirit lives inside Maverick and UPPERROOM (Acts 6:5, Romans 8:9-11, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:16-19, Galatians 4:6, Ephesians 5:18, and 2 Timothy 1:14). Line 2-4: The Holy Spirit stirs Maverick and UPPERROOM, making them feel alive, detecting His movement in their present place. Line 1: Another prayer, that the Holy Spirit would descend like a dove (Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, Luke 3:22, and John 1:32). They also pray that He rests on them as He did to the early followers of Jesus in Acts 2:3. Lines 1-3: Maverick and UPPERROOM’s prayer is that the Holy Spirit surrounds them as He did in Genesis 1:2. How much of the lyrics line up with Scripture? Following this is the final iteration of the Chorus, containing the same five-line phrase four times in a row. Bridge essentially repeats the same three lines six times.
Side Note: To those annoyed by massive repetition, almost the entire song repeats this same message over and over again. They are immersed in His Presence and love. Through a series of collaborative albums, Maverick City Music rose to notoriety within the Christian music community. Maverick City Music originated from Atlanta, GA and was founded by Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay. Just as the artist knows that it is God who was responsible for sparking creation through His spirit, they also know that it is God who is responsible for filling them through the movement of His spirit - and they are confident He will. In no way does the artist believe that God will not come and that His presence will not be enough to completely fill the room and every heart present. However, as much as the lyrics humbly ask God to come move and rest on His people, the entire track is also a confident declaration that He will do just that.
From the beginning to end of the song, the artist helps the listener boldly enter the throne room of God and ask Him to rest on them with His spirit. A driving, rhythmic melodic cadence moves the listener with the same persistentency present in lyrics as Maverick City Music implores God to come. Nodding back to the beginning of creation when God’s spirit rested on the waters and then filled the earth, “Rest On Us” by Maverick City Music moves the listener in a call for the spirit of God to rest again on and fill His people again. "Spirit, when You move You make my heart pound Lake and Eniola Abioye) Yearns for God’s Spirit to Move Like it Did During Creation in “Rest On Us.”
